When Iām working with the bees, I canāt help imagining what the world is like from their perspective ā the bustling hive, the urgency, the tiny dramas of daily life. This very short story is my way of giving the bees a voice, especially Bess, who represents that busy, overworked part in all of us!
āDeep inside the one of the bustling hives at Honeysuckle Meadow lives Bess, a hardworking little bee with a slightly dramatic personality. Bess believed ā very strongly ā that she was single-handedly responsible for keeping the entire meadow pollinated.
Every morning sheād buzz out of the hive muttering complaints like,
āWhy oh why must the flowers all bloom at once?!ā
One sunny afternoon, after a particularly frantic pollen-collecting spree, Bess crash-landed onto a patch of lavender. Exhausted, she flopped onto her back and declared to no one in particular:
āThatās it. Iām retiring. Tell the Queen!ā
But as she lay there dramatically awaiting rescue, the lavenderās gentle scent drifted up around her. Bess took one deep breath⦠then another⦠and slowly she felt her tiny muscles loosen and her frazzled wings stop buzzing.
A wise old worker bee named Mabel spotted her.
āBess, dear, youāve discovered the secret of lavender calm!ā
She handed her a tiny pot of balm made from the hiveās pure beeswax mixed with the soothing lavender sheād collapsed into.
Bess rubbed a little onto her tired wings. āOhhhhhh,ā she sighed, āI feel like a whole new bee. A calmer bee. A bee with boundaries.ā
From that day forward, Bess became the hiveās official relaxation ambassadorāteaching other bees the importance of slowing down, taking deep breaths, and face-planting into a lavender bush when needed.
To honour her, the other bees, with a little help from me, created a special blend inspired by her discovery:
Bee Calm Balm ā its for when youāre buzzing a bit too loudly on the inside.
